Thank you for this travelogue, Lynn. Your words and photos bring back memories. I backpacked in Zimbabwe in '86 and Kenya in '91. Highlights were canoeing down the Zambezi from Kariba Dam to Mana Pools (hippos are the most dangerous animals on the river!) and watching a large elephant herd on the move to a waterhole in Samburu. The cases of exposed film were my most precious luggage items. I must dig out my photos again one day.

Remember that iconic image of the elephant taken sometime in the 70s or 80s? Taken just before the elephant charged at the photographer. I was holding my breath reading your words, beautifully atmospheric. And who doesn’t love an elephant, they’re so beautiful.

Yes! It was a bit of a heart-stopping moment, but what a privilege to be so close to such a beautiful animal.

Delighted to find your newsletter. Loved the photos ( best I’ve yet seen of buffalo) and wallowed in the words as they took me home. Mi ui a, thank you in Ju/‘honasi.

Thanks for sharing this, Lynn. I caught a boat along Lake Kariba and stayed at the Victoria Falls Hotel for a night when I was 13. Amazing how your pics bring back so many memories! ✨

Thank you so much for sharing these extraordinary photos and tales of your journey!! I can’t tell you what a treat it was immersing myself in this post...it felt like I was right there with you. Maybe someday I’ll get to Africa, but for right now, you’ve given me an amazing sojourn from the comfort of my recliner. 🙏

It’s my pleasure, Amy. I do hope you get to travel to Africa sometime - it’s an amazing continent and, somehow, gets under your skin once you’ve been.

Thanks so much for this stunning letter! I am reading it from my couch, wrapped in a blanket, next to the wood stove, with a snowy Maine winter outside the window. It was really special to be able to go on safari from here :)
