One of my earliest journeys with a camera took me to St Kilda, an archipelago adrift in the Atlantic Ocean to the west of the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
Just wonderful, Lynn. Fascinating. And your enthusiasm shines through. I’ve long wanted to visit St Kilda (have you read Cal Flyn’s book by the way?) I really loved looking at your photographs.
I love how you’ve managed to illustrate every tiny detail in words and images Lynn, this is beautifully put together and truthfully, you fill me with a deep desire to travel once again with my camera in hand, even to islands with no escape ! Thank you for sharing 🙏🏽
That was a great read Lynn. I can see how the remoteness and ruggedness of that island would be appealing for a visit (or repeated visits) but absolutely brutal for living.
Thanks Michael. Maybe part of the appeal is that you can leave...I certainly enjoyed being totally off-grid for a few days but appreciated my comforts when I got home. And, yes, it would have been pretty brutal living there.
This was really interesting to read. I hadn’t read anything about St Kilda before. The photos you took are stunning. It looks a beautiful place to visit.
Thanks, Emily, so glad you enjoyed reading about St Kilda. I find it an utterly magical place to visit, but I’m also acutely aware of how hard life must have been there.
Definitely worth a visit, John. You can do a trip with the guys I travelled with (you stay in the renovated houses, although it is very basic) or you can do it under your own steam but would have to camp.
Haha...but I warn you, the accommodation is basic...dormitory style with a trip to the toilet block for ablutions...you have to take a sleeping bag. You're well looked after by the chef though.
Glad you enjoyed it, Alison. There is such a wealth of information on St Kilda - I barely scratched the surface, but what I’ve shared gives a flavour 🙂
What an excellent introduction to such a wild and wonderful place. Definitely on my growing list of must visit spots.👍😃
Thanks, Ross. It's most definitely worth a visit - hope you get there one day!

Thanks, Bee - it's an incredible experience being out there. I hope you get there sometime.
Yes, I've read Cal's book. I also did an online narrative non-fiction writing course with her last year - she's a fabulous tutor. She's doing a guest writer slot (online) at Moniack Mhor in April https://www.moniackmhor.org.uk/courses/2474-online-guest-reader-event-non-fiction-cal-flyn/
Going to book! Thanks Lynn.
Hi Bee,

Thank you so much, Susie, what a lovely thing to say, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I do hope you travel with your camera again 🙂📷
We’ e been to the Outer Hebrides a lot but not yet managed to get to St Kilda. It’s on the list. Thanks for sharing your experience. Great photos.
Thanks - I hope you manage to get out some time!

Yes it sounded really hard. I would have struggled to live there despite the beauty.
Thanks for this Lynn, I have had my eye on St Kilda for a while now. I had better start planning after seeing what it has to offer. Cheers John

Yes I would go with group to stay in the renovated house, because I don't do camping!! 😂

Oh I can handle that, not sure anyone else could handle my snoring though!
Wouldn’t worry about it. There are snoring Olympics every year 🤣
